The College Council on Wednesday 2 February decided that only the Gonville & Caius College Banner (the College flag) will be flown from the College flagpole, after a recommendation made at the General Meeting on Friday 28 January.

At the General Meeting, members of the Fellowship were asked to consider a proposal from a working group on the College’s policy on flags, and which included student representation. The majority of Fellows in attendance voted in favour of flying only the College flag.

Gonville & Caius College is committed to improving diversity and eradicating discrimination. The College flag is a symbol which unites all in the Caius community. Choosing to fly only the College flag avoids concerns regarding political neutrality, and the difficulty of choosing between the plurality of good causes for which a flag could be flown.

The decision complements a recent amendment to Regulation 22 to support freedom of individual expression. This amendment allows the display of any legal flag, poster, or similar, by students in their rooms and windows, including outward-facing ones.

Students and all members of the College community are invited to meet representatives of the Fellowship to discuss this decision.

The Master, Professor Pippa Rogerson, said: “Gonville & Caius College remains firmly committed to making College a place where everyone feels welcome, and where everyone can thrive. It is incumbent on us all to make changes to improve diversity and eradicate discrimination and we are working as a community at Caius to support and boost representation.”
