Caius Blues and Half Blues took a brief rest-bite from their studies last Friday to celebrate their sporting achievements at dinner hosted by our Master Professor Sir Alan Fersht.

Awarded to students who compete at the highest level of University sport, the Blues are a prestigious recognition of talent and success. A Full Blue (or Blue for short) is the highest honour that can be given to Cambridge sportsmen and women and recognises accomplishments in sports such as rowing, football, tennis, athletics, rugby union and cricket.  While a Half Blue is awarded to students who have achieved success in sports including archery, yachting, volleyball, ice hockey and riding.

This is the second time a dinner has been hosted by our Master to celebrate Caius’ success in the world of sport. Initiated by Hephzibah Adeosun, a fourth-year Law and Management student and a recipient of a Full Blue in Athletics, the event gave students the chance to come together and celebrate each other’s accomplishments in sports including rowing, tennis, hockey, athletics and fencing.

No stranger to sporting success, our Master Professor Fersht has a Half Blue in Chess and was President of the University’s Chess Club. Speaking after the dinner, Prof Fersht said: “The dinner was an excellent idea proposed by the Blues, led by Hephzibah, and I very much enjoyed entertaining them.”

“Participation in sport is a fun and beneficial activity, because of the social side, but also because it teaches you to learn how to lose, as well as strive to win. Expecting that you can’t always win is an important life lesson.”

Congratulations to all Caius Blues!
