Eugene Paykel (1934-2023)

Professor Eugene Paykel, an Emeritus Fellow of Gonville & Caius College, has died. He was 88.

Professor Paykel died on Sunday 3 September, less than a week before his 89th birthday, following a short illness. He died peacefully accompanied by his wife and his son.

Born in Auckland, New Zealand, on September 9, 1934, Professor Paykel studied Medicine at the University of Otago in Dunedin before moving to London and then Cambridge.

Known for his research work on depression, clinical psychopharmacology and social psychiatry, Professor Paykel was admitted as a Fellow of Caius in January 1986.

He was Head of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge from 1985 to 2001, when he retired.
