Caian Sir Geoffrey Vos appointed Chancellor of the High Court

The Rt Hon Sir Geoffrey Vos, a Caian lawyer and Honorary Fellow, has been appointed Chancellor of the High Court.

Sir Geoffrey's appointment, which takes effect from 24 October 2016, follows the elevation of Sir Terence Etherton to the post of Master of the Rolls on 3 October 2016.

The Right Honorable Lord Justice Vos came up to Caius to read Law in 1973. He was called to the Bar in 1977, practising in Chancery Chambers and becoming a QC in 1993, and became a High Court judge in the Chancery Division in 2009.

Between 2005 and 2009, Sir Geoffrey was a Judge of the Courts of Appeal of Jersey and Guernsey, and a Judge of the Court of Appeal of the Cayman Islands between 2008 and 2009. He sat as a Deputy High Court Judge from 1999 until 2009, and was the Chairman of the Chancery Bar Association from 1999 to 2001 and of the Bar Council in 2007. He was President of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary from June 2014 to June 2016. 

Sir Geoffrey was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2013. Among a string of prominent cases, he handled the phone-hacking cases brought against News International. A former chair of the bar, he is also known for his work as a champion of social mobility, including chairing the mentoring charity the Social Mobility Foundation.
