On International Women’s Day, the outgoing and incoming Gonville & Caius Students’ Union Women’s and Non-Binary Officers discuss the role.

Ciara Mayers (History 2019)

The role of Women’s and Non-Binary Officer at Caius has been incredibly fulfilling, much more than I imagined it could be when I applied for the role last year. I have been able to help and support numerous members of the college, and have been a part of some great projects and campaigns. This role has been really rewarding, and it is nice to think that I contributed a small part to welcoming new students into the Caius community, as well as working towards improving the experience of female students in the college. I am definitely very grateful for the support networks and friendships that exist here: they have played a huge role in shaping my experiences both as Women’s and Non-Binary Officer and as a student – it makes me very proud! Hopefully, International Women’s Day this year will be a chance to celebrate the progress the college has made, throughout its history, and over the past two years, as we are finally able to re-connect in person and rekindle the spirit of the Caius community!

Ellie Bevis (Law 2020)

I am so grateful to have the privilege of being Caius’ Women and Non-Binary Officer this year. Already, I have been so impressed by the community at Caius who have put forward so many great ideas to improve gender equality at our college. I believe that gender inequality is systemic and institutional and while Caius has come a long way from being a male only college, there is always more that we can do. I am proud to be the person to fight for these changes and to improve inclusivity at Caius. Making sure everyone feels welcome and respected for who they are, irrespective of gender, is so integral to creating a supportive community and I can only hope that this year I make a dent in achieving this goal!
