The Choir of Gonville and Caius College has recorded a new album titled Philips & Dering: Motets.

The Choir recorded the album in Holy Trinity Church, Minchinhampton last July over the course of a week, working closely with the early music ensemble, In Echo. It is the Choir's first album together since 2018 and also their debut on Linn Records.

The new recording offers a fresh insight into the lives and works of two expatriate English Catholic composers exiled to Flanders during the Reformation. Indeed, it is the first time much of this repertoire has ever been recorded.

“This was a great opportunity for us – our first recording since Covid and my first with the Choir,” Gonville & Caius Precentor Matthew Martin said.

“Although some of this repertoire is already represented on disc, there is a much that remains unrecorded – and it's wonderfully colourful. A lot of work went into putting the scores and editions together, and we hope that the recording might excite some renewed interest in these two composers.”
