With the approach of spring, the natural world is the focus of Lent Term's Featured Book from the Gonville & Caius College Lower Library.

Each term a member of the Library staff selects a text from the College’s historic collections. James Luff, the College Library's Rare Books Cataloguer, has selected Ortus Sanitatis (‘Garden of Health’), which could be considered the first encyclopaedia of natural history.

The Featured Book, including images of a selection of the pages, can be found on the Library pages of the College website.

James also discusses whether the book can be called an incunabulum, which officially means printed prior to 1501.

"While there is much to recommend the neatness of limiting the definition in this way, reality is seldom so tidy," James writes.
