Herball (1636)

Lower Library L.27.28

Our copy of John Gerard's Herball, a catalogue of plants and their properties, bears the traces of practical study. It contains not only plant specimens, cut and pressed between the pages, but also an outline in rust of the unknown reader's scissors.

This is the edition thoroughly revised by Thomas Johnson. The exact Johnson paid Gerard a backhanded compliment in his preface, suggesting that the author's enthusiasm led him to 'perform more than he could accomplish' in the original 1597 publication.
