Gonville & Caius College Porters are renowned for their kind and generous nature – and two have shown this extends far beyond the Caius community by volunteering to support the Covid-19 vaccination roll out.

John Bufton and Graham Darling, who work as Relief Porters at Caius, used their increased downtime during the national lockdown in the first half of 2021 to volunteer at their local vaccination centres.

Graham volunteered at the East Barnwell Health Centre in Cambridge, while John was working at the Stanground Surgery near Peterborough for the Lakeside Healthcare Group. John is pictured above with the operations lead at the vaccination centre.

John said: “During my lifetime, which has not been short, I needed to use the NHS on a number of occasions, and this was an opportunity for me to pay back some of the support it has freely given me.”

The Stanground Surgery became one of the hubs for the group servicing the needs of six other surgeries around Peterborough in the delivery of vaccine.

The Stanground site has delivered over 32,000 vaccinations since late December 2020, and The Lakeside Healthcare Group has vaccinated around 100,000 patients in all.

Over 19,000 vaccinations have taken place at East Barnwell Health Centre.
