Gonville & Caius College Fellow Professor Tim Jones is more often seen congratulating his students on their graduations – on Friday he was among those processing to Senate House to receive his MA degree.

Tim is a Professor of Computer Architecture and Compilation in the University of Cambridge’s Department of Computer Science and Technology, as well as 1956 College Lecturer, and Director of Studies at Caius.

Tim completed his undergraduate degree at Bristol and his PhD at Edinburgh, where he continued as a postdoc and held a Research Fellowship jointly from the UK's Royal Academy of Engineering and EPSRC. He spent 2010 at Harvard and moved to Cambridge in 2011. He joined Caius in 2017 and was promoted to a Cambridge Professorship in October 2022.

His MA is a quirk of Cambridge, as receiving it allows him to seek a higher degree at a later date.

Praelector Dr John Latimer says: “Previously Fellows who have taken their MA to become members of Regent House have graduated in absentia. This is the first time a Fellow has attended in person in 12 years as Praelector. It’s great.”

Tim adds: “One of the reasons I thought I’d do it in person is because I’m a Director of Studies. I wanted to go through the whole thing and see what everyone else goes through.”
