With great sadness, the College announces the death of Professor Grigory Barenblatt, mathematician and Honorary Fellow, aged 91.

Born in Moscow, Professor Barenblatt obtained his degree and PhD from Moscow State University.

In 1992, Professor Barenblatt was elected the first G. I. Taylor Professor of Fluid Mechanics at the University of Cambridge, a position he held until 1994. Later that year, he joined Gonville & Caius as a Professorial Fellow. Following this position, he embarked on a career at the University of California, Berkley. In 1999, Professor Barenblatt became an Honorary Fellow of Caius.

A distinguished mathematician, he was awarded many medals and was a Foreign Member or Associate of the major learned societies: The Royal Society; National Academy of Sciences of the USA; and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Speaking about Professor Barenblatt, Master Professor Sir Alan Fersht said: "He very much loved Caius, both for its intellectual and friendly environment and its contrast from the Moscow of that time."
