Gonville & Caius College has received a Platinum Colleges award for the 2021-22 Green Impact year. Thank you to the students, staff and Fellows of Caius for the collaborative work which earned the prize.

Green Impact is the University of Cambridge’s environmental accreditation scheme. The initiative is in place to help all departments and colleges across the University be more environmentally friendly through everyday actions.

Caius was awarded gold in 2020-21 in the College’s first participation in the scheme; now Caius has earned the top prize.

Particular thanks at Caius go to GCSU co-opt Clarissa Salmon (English 2020) for all of her work on the Green Impact accreditation. Thank you also to former Green co-opt and Caius Allotment Society co-founder Moby Wells (History 2019) and Heqing Huang, who led on the initiative last year. Clarissa and Moby were awarded Vice Chancellor Social Impact Awards earlier this month for sustainability and volunteering, respectively.

“Caius has worked hard as a community to reduce our College’s environmental impact and we’re delighted to win this award, which was a true collaborative effort," Clarissa said.

"I’d particularly like to thank the Domestic Bursar, Jennifer Phillips, for her leadership and expertise, plus all the staff at Caius, particularly those in Catering, Estates and Maintenance and Housekeeping. Moby Wells was also instrumental to getting this accreditation, and I hope his environmental passion can be an inspiration to all students at Caius.”

Domestic Bursar Jennifer Phillips said: “The awareness and measures implemented through Green Impact are something we are determined to continue to build on.

“The student involvement in driving engagement is crucial and hugely appreciated – our success reflects circular positive feedback on behaviours between enthused staff and enthused students.

“I’m grateful to Clarissa Salmon, Moby Wells and Heqing Huang for their enthusiasm, dedication and leadership.”

The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 7 June.
