Caius Boat Club celebrated one of its finest on Friday when a boat naming ceremony was held in honour of Martin Wade (Natural Sciences/Law 1962).

Martin, a Fellow Benefactor of Caius, has been President of Caius Boat Club since 2004. He was accompanied at the boat naming by his wife, Vicky, and two sons, Charles and Nick, with daughter Georgina unable to attend.

In 1999 Martin and his friend, David Bell, established the Bell Wade Fund, which provides an award for the most outstanding sportsman or woman of the year, who has also performed outstandingly at Tripos, and a number of bursaries for other sports people who can make the case for financial support.

At the time of writing – and not wishing to curse proceedings – his eponymous boat was being used by M1 at the top of Division One and seeking to claim Head of the River in May Bumps.

Vicky Wade – named after Martin’s wife – was used by M1 in the mid- to late 2000s, and the immediate predecessor to Martin Wade was Jack McDonald. Both the Vicky Wade and Jack McDonald were given to the Boat Club by Martin, serving the Club well for many years. The Jack McDonald is still in service.
