Gonville & Caius College has published an interim report into Legacies of Slavery and Coerced Labour at the College.

In July 2019, following the launch of a research project into the University of Cambridge’s historical links to slavery and coerced labour under colonialism, the College announced it would be undertaking a preliminary programme to examine possible connections to slave ownership.

This report – Research Project Looking into the Legacies of Slavery and Coerced Labour at Gonville & Caius College – sets out a summary of preliminary research undertaken in the College archives by a student supervised by the Working Group on Legacies of Slavery. A Fellow’s response is also added.

The initial research found little evidence of any direct connections to slavery from undergraduate alumni or Fellows. There was also little evidence that donations to the College were made by people with connections to slavery or coerced labour.

The Working Group is continuing its investigation. A postdoctoral researcher has been employed to investigate further any other connections. The results of that research will be published in due course.
