Gonville and Caius College welcomes the recent announcement of the launch of a research project on Cambridge University's historical links to slavery and coerced labour under colonialism.

The College will be undertaking a preliminary programme of scoping research by working through its matriculation records and its records of benefaction to examine the College's possible connections to slave ownership. At the end of the preliminary scoping exercise, the College will present this research publicly. The College's Fellows in History conduct research and teaching in the history of coerced labour, abolition, colonialism, and maritime history, and also on the histories of class, race, and gender. They will be actively involved in this research. The College recognises that a response to the inequalities that arose from slavery and colonialism requires sustained work over the long-term in addition to collaboration across the collegiate university and beyond. The College's archives remain open to the University's researchers.
