Exam excellence at Caius

  • 07 September 2026

Students of Gonville & Caius in 2025-26 achieved the College’s best results since modern records began, analysis of exam results shows.

At General Admission on July 2, the graduating cohort achieved a set of results topped only by their, predecessors in July 2025.

And, following the breakdown of results being released internally at the University of Cambridge, results for first and second-year students show a collective strength academically.

Caius ranked fifth of 31 colleges in 2025-26 – compared to 11th in 2024-25 – behind Trinity, Selwyn, Christ’s and Queens’. There were Firsts for 37% of students across year groups (above the University average of 31%).

When appraising the results, Senior Tutor Dr Andrew Spencer pointed to the success of admissions to Caius, under Tutor for Admissions and Outreach Dr Chris Scott, with applications to Caius growing to more than 1200 per year in the last two years.

Dr Spencer said: “In raw terms, this is the best set of results in the College’s history. Comparatively with other Colleges, it is our best result since 2009, 17 years ago.

“What is especially pleasing for now and the future is that the real strength in the results this year is not with the graduating class but with the first- and second-years, which are the first two year groups where we obtained over 1200 applications.

“If we are able to sustain this, there is every reason to think that we can maintain the improvement to the results. A huge thanks must go to Chris and his team as well, of course, to Directors of Studies, Tutors and College Lecturers, along with all the staff who support students.”
