Celebrating the history of Historians at Caius

  • 14 September 2018

Caius Historians who matriculated from 1995 until 2017 gathered over the weekend to celebrate their connection with Caius over the years. Current and former Fellows in History were also in attendance including Professor David Abulafia (1974), Dr Annabel Brett (1985), Professor Stephen Tuck (1989), Dr Melissa Calaresu (1997), Professor Sir Richard Evans (1998), Professor Peter Mandler (2001), Dr Sujit Sivasundaram (2001), Dr Andrew Bell (2006), Dr Emma Hunter (2008), and Dr Bronwen Everill (2015).

During the event, the group of Historians explored the College Archives in the Lower Library and were shown interesting pieces from the vast collection of papers and objects related to the long history of the College and their time at Caius. They also had a chance to hear talks from two of our outstanding younger historians  - Dr Rebecca Darley from Birkbeck College about ‘The Western Indian Ocean in Late Antiquity’ and Dr Morgan Ring from The Warburg Institute about ‘Rewriting the Golden Legend in Early Modern England’. These talks were the highlight of the event!

Following the talks, our Historians discussed their research further during drinks and dinner in Hall. The occasion was the first event hosted at College for Historians who studied at Caius while Dr Melissa Calaresu has been Director of Studies in History.

Dr Calaresu commented ‘It was wonderful to see so many Historians come back to College this weekend to get together with current and former fellows who taught them. We hope to host another event soon’.
