Caius MedSoc providing valuable application advice

  • 18 July 2024

Caius Medical Society are supporting prospective applicants with a series of online talks, beginning on Monday (July 22).

The aim of the talks – sign up using this link – is to support candidates with their applications to the University of Cambridge and to give a taster of studying medicine as a student of Gonville & Caius College.

The talks will take place online to ensure as many people as possible can attend, with handouts to accompany the events, which will look at medicine-specific elements of the application process and include taster lectures, with an opportunity to quiz current Caius medical students about their experiences.

Caius MedSoc President Tharun Manivannan (Medicine 2022), pictured below left, says: “Medicine itself has so many unique challenges, really requiring you to have a passion for the field to do well. I feel the point of an application process is to try and mirror that as much as possible.

“Looking for these opportunities can be a real challenge in itself: from my point of view the more events we run and the easier we make it for students to find these events, the less of a pain it becomes. I personally was not able to come to many in person events due to circumstances so I wanted to make sure this was online and more accessible.”

Caius MedSoc committee members including access officer Emie Mettam (Medicine 2022), pictured above right, have devised a programme which provides a sense of the Cambridge course and to hear from existing pre-clinical and clinical medicine students.

“The course is very intense, so from my point of view it is about trying to make sure we support students and prospective applicants as much as possible,” Tharun adds.

While seeking to demystify the application process and course at Cambridge, Tharun, Emie and others will be espousing the virtues of Caius as a place to study medicine. With 25 per academic year, Caius has the largest cohort of medical students. But that is not the only reason to choose Caius, Tharun says.

“Having the largest medicine population of all the colleges can be a massive advantage. You get a lot of peers to work with and many seniors to help you out,” Tharun adds.

“We are extremely lucky with the resources in the Medical Society, whether it comes to revision or general support. And a lot of our supervisors are lecturers on the course – you get to meet a lot of people at Caius who have basically written the textbook themselves! So there is no better person to ask, following your curiosity.

“And generally, I love the college atmosphere and the pastoral support. I’ve made some amazing friends here.”
