The first book in a dystopian trilogy by alumnus Marcus Martin (2011) was awarded gold in the Science Fiction category at the Global eBook Awards last year. CRISIS, the opening instalment of the Convulsive saga, also won bronze at the North American Reader’s Favorite Awards and an IndieB.R.A.G. Medallion in the USA for outstanding writing. The series follows 28-year-old Lucy Young as she faces a genetic invasion contaminating the earth.

After launching his writing career in student radio and stand-up comedy, Marcus created and staged three plays before branching out into novels. When asked about his writing style, the author explained: “It’s about grabbing a genre you love, ideas that fascinate you, and a style that’s your own. If you can challenge, intrigue, and surprise yourself, your readers will sense it and want to follow you on the journey.” All three Convulsive books are available now on his website.

An accomplished composer and graduate of Kings College London, Marcus came to Caius in 2011 for the Music MPhil and went on to read the Postgraduate Diploma in Theology and Religious Studies the following year. He settled in Cambridge after his studies and still lives in the city today.
