The Director General of the CBI and a leading feminist fashion designer will be among a high-profile line-up of speakers at the third Women in Economics Day at Caius.

A last few places are still available for the highly popular event on 21 September 2017, now making a name for itself as a leading force in the drive to encourage more young women to consider studying and making a career in Economics. Spaces are open, for free, to Year 12 and 13 girls from any school or college who are interested in taking up the subject.

For Carolyn Fairbairn, the first female head of the powerful business lobby group the Confederation of British Industry, an appearance at the conference marks a return to her former College. She was among the first women to study at Caius, graduating with a double first class degree in Economics. Carolyn will discuss Brexit and the British Economy - the theme of this year's event - before taking questions on this issue and on her own studies and career.

A no less dynamic voice at the event will be provided by designer Jenna Young, whose fashion label This Is The Uniform explores themes of feminism and class (one of Jenna's designs is pictured right; image by Victoria Bateman). Working in one of the UK's most prominent and successful creative industries, Jenna will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing British fashion in a post-Brexit landscape.

The Women in Economics event was devised by Caius Direcor of Studies in Economics Dr Victoria Bateman, who teaches macroeconomics and economic history and will introduce the day with a talk entitled "Brexit in perspective: Economic challenges today". Victoria, who writes regular economic commentary for Bloomberg View, CapX and UnHerd, has a reputation for engaging powerfully and accessibly with current issues in politics and cultural thought, and is currently writing a book which combines her interests in both Economics and feminism.

As well as top female speakers - last year's line-up featured Yvette Cooper MP, former Shadow Home Secretary and chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee - the Caius Women in Economics Day has a strong reputation for offering sixth formers the chance to hear from young women economists who are still studying or just embarking on their careers. This year, two recent graduates and one current student will join Victoria on a panel discussing careers in Economics, with plenty of opportunity for questions.

Girls attending the day, which runs from 10.30am to 4.30pm, are also able to enjoy lunch in the College Hall, with time to explore the historic Old Courts before and afterwards if they wish.

Speakers:

Victoria Bateman - Victoria is Director of Studies in Economics at Gonville & Caius, where she teaches macroeconomics and economic history. She writes regular economic commentary for Bloomberg View, CapX and UnHerd, and is currently writing a book which combines her interests in both economics and feminism.

Carolyn Fairbairn - Carolyn is Director General of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). She spent her early career at the World Bank, The Economist magazine, and McKinsey, and has held senior leadership roles at the BBC and ITV. Carolyn was previously Director of the Competition and Markets Authority, the UK Statistics Authority and the Financial Services Authority, and has experience as a non-executive director on various FTSE boards. Carolyn has a double-first class degree in Economics from Cambridge.

Jenna Young - Jenna works in one of Britain's leading creative industries: fashion. Since graduating from Goldsmiths, she has developed her own fashion label, This Is The Uniform, and her work regularly features in Vogue. Her most recent fashion show took place at the Tate Gallery in London, where she gave a public address on the politics of fashion. Her fashion plays to themes of feminism and class. Jenna grew up in Blackpool.

Helena Roy - Helena studied Economics at Pembroke College, where she wrote a dissertation titled "A Theory of Radicalisation". Helena has since worked at the United Nations, as both an Analyst for UNICEF and a task force coordinator for youth in Arab States. More recently she has pursued research at Caltech (California Institute of Technology) and will soon be starting graduate studies at the University of Oxford.

Nadine Sarwat - Nadine graduated with an Economics degree in 2015 from Gonville & Caius, where she did her final year dissertation on the economic history of Canada. Nadine went on to do a Masters in Finance at the London School of Economics. She now works as a research associate at Bernstein Research in London, where she is a specialist in the oil industry.



Clara Starrsjo - Clara has recently completed the first year of the Economics Tripos here at Gonville & Caius, achieving a first class grade. She will talk about life as a Cambridge student, including opportunities on and off the curriculum. Clara attended the first Women in Economics Day, held in September 2015.
