Joanna Plantin ?-1596

G.21.22. De machinis tormentis telis (1596)

The Plantin Press was founded by Christophe Plantin in Antwerp around 1555 and became a centre of high quality printing in the 16th century and a major family business. His first publication was a treatise on the education of young girls – Christophe himself had five daughters who learned to read and write including Greek and Latin. Along with his wife Joanna several of them were involved in the print trade: Margaretha and her husband became printers in Leiden and their descendants founded the Brill publishing house still active today. Magdalen assisted in proofreading the Biblia Regia in five languages whilst Martina and Catherine ran the family silk shop. This book is printed by the widow Joanna and is a military history including engravings of weapons and engines of war.
