Elizabeth Purslowe ?-1646

B.11.52A. The survey of London (1633)

Elizabeth Purslowe was another prolific printer, running her business for fourteen years after the death of her husband and publishing around 164 books including John Donne’s Juvenalia. She also worked in partnership with Anne Griffin and John Halivand as part of the printer’s syndicate Eliot’s Court Press. Here she is the printer of the fourth edition of Stow’s Survey of London, a historical tour of the topography and social customs of the city. The Guild of Stationers (printers and booksellers) was formed in 1403 but it wasn’t until 1936 that women were able to hold office or adopt the livery.
