Elizabeth Nutt 1666-1746

M.3.39. The great concern of human life, or, A summary account of the fear of God (1729)

Before her marriage Elizabeth Nutt worked as a ‘mercury woman’ selling newspapers and pamphlets on the streets of London. After marriage her husband secured a patent to print law books which Elizabeth retained after his death, bringing her second son into the business to print legal treatises and reports and her three daughters to run their pamphlet and newspaper stalls. She also began a collaboration with fellow mercury woman Anne Dodd and together they produced over 130 titles including on sensational topics and works of religious or political controversy. The family were often charged with flouting censorship regulations and arrested for printing radical material.
