Modern German-Jewish cultural and literary history; journalism, popular culture and the public sphere in nineteenth-century Germany; literary networks and the public intellectual in modern German culture. Publications on nineteenth-century German-Jewish authors (Heinrich Heine, Berthold Auerbach) and the nineteenth-century public sphere. Editor (with Helmut Koopmann) of Kulturkritik, Erinnerungskunst und Utopie nach 1848. Deutsche Literatur und Kultur vom Nachmärz bis zur Gründerzeit in europäischer Perspektive (2003)
