Clubs and Societies
At Cambridge you can do almost anything at almost any level, from ‘having a go’ to semi-professional. University clubs and societies are about trying things you’ve never had the chance to do before (and might never want to do again). Caius, as a large and diverse College, has members with an astonishingly wide range of interests. In addition to participating in University-level activities, many get involved in our own active College societies. To give just a few examples, there are societies centred around drama, music, politics, many different sports and journalism.
Many societies exist simply for recreation and diversion (of a more and less productive kind...). Some societies such as Footlights, the Union Society (debating), the Varsity newspaper, the University sports teams and the College chapel choirs can also provide a springboard for subsequent careers in theatre, politics, journalism, professional sport and music.
Currently, there are around 600 University clubs, societies and groups to choose from. Caius has an additional forty or so, including societies for basketball, bridge, canoeing, chess, hockey, netball, politics, pool, water polo and ultimate frisbee. In the unlikely event that there’s no society for your particular passion, you could start one yourself. All you have to do is find a few like-minded people and the University or the College will probably support it, by providing a venue or even a grant. You can find out much more about clubs and societies in Cambridge here.
In addition to the various clubs and societies, each College and the University as a whole has a students' union, and undergraduate and graduate students are usually members of both. More information about the Cambridge University Students Union is available here. More information about the Caius undergraduate and graduate unions is available here.
