The 25 Per Cent Table
At Caius, Tripos candidates may be eligible for the award of an Exhibition at the Meeting of the Electors to Scholarships if they narrowly miss a First Class result. Eligibility depends on whether or not the candidate lies within the top 25% of the ranked list.
This page is provided to give Directors of Studies and others a quick way to determine whether or not a candidate is likely to be eligible for an Exhibition. In order to discover this, it is necessary to know the number of classed candidates and the number of Firsts that were awarded. This is normally available from examination of the Class List, or from the Mark Book/Order of Merit.
Enter the number of classed candidates in the box below (from 1 to 1000), and press Enter. The ranking of the lowest-ranked candidate who will be considered for an Exhibition will be shown once the screen has refreshed.
Any candidates who were not classified as First Class, but whose ranking was higher than or equal to the number displayed is likely to be eligible for an Exhibition, and this information should be passed to the Tutorial Office (tutorial.office@cai.cam.ac.uk) as soon as possible. In cases of doubt, please contact the Tutorial Office.
Please enter the number of candidates in the examination 1-1000
For the mathematicians: let n1 be the number of examination candidates and n2 be the lowest ranked candidate eligible to be considered for an Exhibition. This utility is determining the largest value of n2 for which 4n2 <= n1.
